#5 Fontaines D.C.
I heard from some friends at KEXP that there was a secret show at Conor Byrne with this sort of post-punk band called Fontaines D.C. from Dublin that I had to check out. I showed up with my camera and what seemed like the whole of KEXP was there for the show! So glad I went. Their sound is unforgettable and will make you want more from the start. Check them out, it’s much more than what I thought from the music to the lyrics to their whole feel and message.
#4 Jenn Champion
Every single time I see Jenn Champion live I wind up crying. This time at Sonic Boom was no different. Her new album has grown on me and I listen to it daily! Although I will always have a soft spot for her album Cool Choices, the ultimate break-up album, I love her new found band in LA and her evolving sound is on point.
#3 Temple Canyon
Temple Canyon is the band you can’t help but fall in love with. Their music and energy are just as amazing as they are. Definitely do yourself a favor and catch them play around Seattle! My 9 yo daughter scream sings along to “Call Into Arms” in my car every morning before school as do I.
#2 Whitney Ballen
I photographed Whitney Ballen’s KEXP in-studio session, but had noise cancellation headphones on during the entire set and never heard her sing. She was incredibly nice and lovely so fast forward to her show at The Sunset that I shot and you would witness my jaw drop as she sang the first notes and I fell in love. Literally unlike anything I have ever heard. An intimate show was had that night at the Sunset that only the attendees will understand. I am a forever fan.
#1 Killer Workout
Easily taking my #1 spot is Killer Workout. I went into the Sunset not knowing what to expect and from just moments into the first song I was hooked! Super high energy music everyone was dancing to with lyrics that stick in your brain. I went home that night and immediately put their album on rotation in my daily playlist. The song ‘Sister’ is my favorite and the video is a must see.
